“… Your Light Must Shine Before Others

20130302DSC_2809-039By virtue of our Christian baptism, our vocation in life, whatever else it might include, is to make the living Christ present to the world around us! Most of us, it would seem, seldom if ever take this responsibility seriously. Instead, we spend entire lifetimes either refusing to think about it, or simply rationalizing excuses for not getting around to acting out our Christian calling!
In today’s first reading we find the prophet Jeremiah attempting to exercise this same human tendency.  Claiming, he was “too young” Jeremiah attempts to resist his vocation to proclaim God’s Word. In response, God points out that He Himself provides the means to accomplish His designs.  Using military metaphors such as: “pillar of iron”, “wall of brass”, and “fortified city” God also promises to protect those whom He chooses, and assures us that He will not allow us to be crushed.
The great saints took these assurances seriously, and courageously did God’s bidding. Do we? Or are we afraid to open our mouths or show our faith when we detect opposition?
