Writing Straight With Crooked Lines

17 Jun 2018 by SHRCChurch, Comments Off on Writing Straight With Crooked Lines

One of the greatest of all of the Church’s theologians, St. Augustine, once said: How do we know that the Spirit dwells within us? …When we think only of the good of others, and not of ourselves!

We can easily get the impression from the Holy Scriptures, including today’s reading, that despite our consistent shortcomings, ultimately it is God who brings about goodness in His creation. And this is correct.

God writes straight with crooked lines! He has chosen to obtain His purposes by using human instruments. And if we reflect critically upon this fact, therein lies the inevitable tension in human existence. Jesus’ parables point to nature getting results which we should be thankful for but for which we should not take credit!

St. Paul recognizes that God is working through him, and therefore it is not for him to decide where Providence leads for he must think of others rather than himself.

This then is something we  should both admire in others, and seek to emulate ourselves!
