Will You Follow Him?

DSC_6778Today we continue with the theme of the implications of the call to discipleship. The first reading alerts us to the prospect that we may be called to something we never expected. So, Jonah, instead of preaching repentance to his fellow chosen people, instead is sent to save their hated enemies, the Ninevites.

St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that there is no place for procrastination in discipleship because: “The time is running out”. Or as Jesus announced in today’s Gospel: “The kingdom of God is at hand!” Notice what Our Lord follows with: “Repent (change our ways) and believe!”

Ultimately we are asked to be willing to follow the example of the first disciples: “They abandoned what they previously had been doing and followed Him.”
