Will We Heed the Call?

Advent 2010-001Advent is a period of time set aside for spiritual not material preparation for Emmanuel…God with us. It is a time of  longing for that which is not yet perfectly or completely a part of our lives.
In our first reading the prophet Jeremiah speaks of a time when justice will prevail in the house of Israel “…I will raise up for David a just shoot;  he shall do what is right and just in the land.” We delude ourselves if we believe that modern society is sufficiently just! Consider, the teaching of Pope Francis who sees modern humanity submerged in the confused disillusionment of our failed potential. As long as some are ignored and left out, socially, economically or politically Pope Francis would say we have hardened our hearts to injustice!
In today’s second reading St. Paul prays: “May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all…” Again, Pope Francis teaches that this can’t be an abstract desire but must be a person to person, “eye to eye” encounter, and that the greatest of all evils is indifference… simply not caring!
In the Gospel Jesus speaks of the coming final judgment and warns us to remain vigilant. “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.”
Advent is the time to heed the wake – up call of the Gospel! God is in our, and our brother’s/sister’s midst! Do we care?  Advent is a good time to reflect on our inaction and indifference, and ask what does Emmanuel require of us?
