We Get It… or Do We?

25 Mar 2018 by SHRCChurch, Comments Off on We Get It… or Do We?

Our familiarity with today’s readings may lull us into the mentality that we “get it”, so let’s move on. But, do we really get it?

Jesus did indeed enter Jerusalem with a lot of the details of the expected Messiah/King. He rode on a donkey, as did the ancient kings, the palms, the laying down of cloaks, etc. the Hosannas, were all what the people expected.

Yet when one looks further, as the next reading reminds us, Jesus was in fact not the kind of Messiah they expected: no vainglorious victor, but rather a suffering servant!  A servant ultimately rejected due to the hardness of men’s hearts and our unwillingness to give up our preconceived notions of what constitutes our destiny and happiness.

The real challenge in life is in finding the humility to admit that we really don’t “get it” and that we have been wrong all along!

To truly “get it”…  it is not sufficient for us to merely listen to what Jesus did, but rather to join Him in emptying ourselves so as to let God in and allow Him to save us!
