Trust in His Word…

DSC_6704In our first reading, the prophet Amos sets the tone for today’s Biblical reflection: “Woe to the complacent!” The rich man in today’s Gospel, in his complacency, ignored Lazarus who needed his help. When judgment came and the rich man was deprived of the “ bosom of Abraham” he complained that the signs for what he should have done with his life were not clear enough.   His protest however, was met with the response: “They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them”.
Said another way, God will not so overwhelm us with directions that we have no choices in life. Rather, He asks us to act out of trust in His Word because we love Him! Thus St. Paul instructed Timothy in the second reading: “Keep the commandment without stain or reproach.” Not so much because it was the most obvious or seemingly intelligent thing to do, but because that is what His love urges us to do!
