Time To Put On Christ

Today’s Gospel: Jesus is the Good Shepherd, is so familiar to us that there is a serious danger that our eyes will glaze over and we will daydream about something else. Yes, we know the image: those who are simply going through the motions, will run away when danger threatens. But Jesus, who is the Good Shepherd will give up his very life to care for His flock. He is not a robotic administrator. He personally knows His sheep.

Perhaps you share an older way of thinking that it is the duty of the clergy and religious to take care of the flock. Well the fact of the matter is that through Baptism and the Eucharist we put on Christ – become His mystical body – become His eyes and ears and helping hand in this day in Troy, New York. We, in our time and place, are called to be the Good Shepherd! We can’t daydream our lives away while the flock is scattered. We can’t run away when we encounter danger. Who can deny that the flock is in danger and needs a lot of help these days? Do we make an effort to get to know them personally, or do we remain aloof?

It’s time to offer a personal touch to those who have gone astray.
