Time to Contemplate and Convert

Cultural commentators point out that in days of yore in western society (Christendom) humans’ focus was to look up to God, the concern being were they good enough in God’s eyes to make it to heaven. Today, the focus is sideways rather than upwards to determine how much prestige one has in the eyes of fellow humans.

We are familiar with the adulation we place on celebrity status, be it a sports hero, a movie star, a successful business magnate, or even a politician. Money, power and prestige are what we hunger for and admire… too often regardless of character flaws.

In today’s second reading St. Paul calls this mentality the way of the flesh. Today’s first reading is a prophecy that when the Messiah comes, it will not be in pomp and power but rather in meekness, and he will do away with the instruments of war in favor of peace. Jesus in today’s Gospel spells it out for us. He requires us to be meek and humble of heart.

Self promotion does not lead to peace, but rather to competition and conflict. Isn’t it time to step back, slow down  and take time contemplate what we truly value and emphasize in our lives. Isn’t it time for conversion?
