The Spirit Dwells Among Us

20130627_194005In Pentecost we celebrate not just an historical event which occurred in the Holy Land almost two thousand years ago, but also something that is part of our every day lives.

Pentecost is all about awareness that God the Spirit dwells among us – that He is in our midst – that He dwells within us: to protect us from error; and also to inspire us to actively build up His kingdom on earth. Recall the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel (right judgement), Fortitude (courage), Knowledge, Piety (reverence) and Fear of the Lord (wonder and awe in God’s presence).

If we allow these gifts to operate in our daily lives, rather than pushing them aside out of selfishness, ignorance, or preoccupation with the superficial, we will contribute to the buildup of His kingdom and enjoy the fruits of the Holy Spirit: Charity, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Generosity, Gentleness, Faithfulness, Modesty, Self-control, and Chastity in our lives.
