The Power of Prayer!

20141123_095015Today’s Scripture readings obviously bring to our attention the power of prayer. It is significant that the examples given to us are prayers asking that God might benefit others and not just the one making the prayer.

In the first reading, Abraham’s fervent intercessory prayer is on behalf of others. In the Gospel we find one of the many occasions when it is specifically mentioned that Jesus was at prayer. And this so impressed His disciples that they asked Him to teach them how to pray. Do we like them have a sincere desire to pray, or do we pray seldom and reluctantly?

How often do we reflect on the phrases of the Our Father? Do we earnestly wish that God’s kingdom come in our time? Do we ask for what we truly need rather than what we simply want? Do we recognize and acknowledge that we will be forgiven only to the degree that we are willing to forgive others who may have offended us?

Finally, we must also remember that prayer is not just asking, but thanking and praising God as well!
