The Potential Power of Grace

SCPS-150925-065There is a lot of talk in today’s readings of God’s word about holiness. We need to be careful not to dismiss it out of hand as an ideal beyond our reach, something that only a handful of saints could attain. The example and intercession of the saints are but a stark reminder of the potential power of grace, if we only take it seriously, and open ourselves up to its transforming path.

Think for a moment of today’s word from St. Paul. We are temples of God; the Spirit of God dwells in us. We are talking about God being truly and actually present to us in some albeit mysterious (can’t fully understand with our limited human abilities) yet real way. What can be more earth shattering than an awareness of that!

If we let consciousness of this be the source of our human activities, all the good deeds (cf. 1st reading) will fall into place. It may be we have some bad habits which first need to be overcome, but with the help of His grace, we too can become “…holy as God is holy”. (Lev.)
