The Advocate!

The Acts of the Apostles begins with an account of the gift of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to the believers who were in the capital city of God’s chosen people, Jerusalem, and the book ends with St. Paul preaching the Gospel to the dwellers of Rome, at that time the capital of what was then thought to be the entire civilized world. The faith had spread and spread rapidly!

Today’s first reading recounts the first foray of the spread of the faith outside of Jerusalem to Samaria. What is the Church trying to tell us with this? Think of the words of St. Peter in today’s second reading: “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you a reason for your hope.” Once again we are challenged to reflect: what obligation does the gift of faith inexorably carry with it?

In today’s Gospel Jesus soberly reminds us, that we need the Advocate which He has promised to send us because He is the truth, the truth which his world cannot accept! We, however, don’t know who will or will not accept Jesus’ truth unless we earnestly try as did the first Christians. So, let’s advocate for the risen Lord with the help of the Advocate!
