Silence and Quiet Reflection

Today’s first reading reminds us of the call of the prophet/judge Samuel to serve the Lord. Notice Samuel’s response to the Lord’s call: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” Is this our response? Or do we prefer not to hear His call?

Today’s Gospel also deals with God’s call, and men’s response. The Lord said: “What are you looking for?” And their response was to ask: “Where are you staying?” so that they might be able to stay with Him. This should provoke us to recognize two challenges in life. 1st What are we ultimately looking for and 2nd are we willing to listen to what God is trying to tell us?

Once again, we will never attain either if we foolishly promote the habit of constant distraction and noise surrounding us. Silence and prayerful focus are essential in life. Let us pray earnestly today the responsorial Psalm 40: “Here I am Lord, I come to do your will.”
