Share Your Faith

We need to constantly be aware that we live in an era and culture of rampant individualism. It is no longer the same seedbed that the Acts of the Apostles tells us that Christianity was first planted in. So rugged and arrogant is that self-centeredness that more and more of our contemporaries have come to think that they can do without even God.

In today’s second reading, St. Peter reminded the early Christians that they were “…a holy priesthood, etc…” as a result of which they didn’t hesitate to try to share that good news with others rather than keep it selfishly to themselves. We contemporaries seem to have gotten too comfortable with the mistaken idea that spreading the Word is the job of the sacramentally ordained priesthood alone. Nothing could be further from the truth… in fact, our union with Christ demands it of us as well!

As Jesus says in today’s Gospel: “Whoever believes in me will do the works I do, and do greater ones…” Our faith is not just a personal possession, but rather something which demands to be shared. Is it not time to examine our consciences; to stop passing the buck? Our contemporaries need us.
