Seek Strength in the Eucharist

Altar Vessels - 03Leviticus was part and parcel of the Old Testament Law (Torah).  Last Sunday we heard Jesus say that he did not come to do away  with the old law so much as to bring it to fulfillment.

See what the old law is teaching us today: “Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy. You shall not bear hatred for your brother or sister in your heart. …Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of  your people. You shall love your neighbor as yourself…”

In speaking to the Corinthians St. Paul reminds us of the foundation for the dignity of every human being: “Do you not know that your are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”  In today’s Gospel we here in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus’ radical call which takes this concept even further: “… If you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So, be perfect (holy), just as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

We cannot do this by our own strength.  This is why we come begging for the Eucharist!
