Rich Soil

Our first reading today emphasizes that God’s word is mighty powerful. In today’s Gospel, Jesus, in his folksy way of using parables instead of direct speech, points out that there are a number of ways we can respond to God’s word. We may immediately brush it off. Or we may have other priorities which choke it out of our consciousness. Only if we take it to heart and allow it to sink in and become part of us will we benefit from it, and it in turn will show its power.

As a contemporary I would add two other serious problems. One is culpable ignorance. We simply don’t know God’s word, when we should, perhaps because we are lazy or simply have chosen to ignore learning it. The other is the mistake of thinking that we know it all, because we have heard it or read it, when in fact we have barely scratched the surface of its deeper meaning of what God is trying to communicate to us.

Let’s face it, as contemporary Christians, too many of us are no longer people of the Bible and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
