Read A… The Good Book Lately?

One cannot help but wonder if the education in the faith for most adult Catholics was deficient by failing to impress the need to read and study on a regular basis, God’s word in the Bible, both Old and New testaments.

The readings we hear at Mass cover less than half of what is contained in the Bible. Notice the opening prayer in today’s liturgy: “O God who has commanded us to listen to your beloved Son, be pleased, we pray, to nourish us inwardly by your word, that, with spiritual sight made pure, we may rejoice to behold your glory.”

Both the first reading and the Gospel today – not to mention the special Preface, “…He manifested to them His glory to show… that the Passion leads to the glory of the resurrection…” remind us how generous God is in rewarding our efforts to hear his word.

The Bible is His word. He gives it to us to complement Sacramental life. Don’t limit your quest for holiness to only the latter. It is never too late to seek that spiritual insight which the Bible offers.
