Welcome Fr. Konaku & Deacon Hook

Fr. Vaughan  welcome’s Fr. Konaku (con-a-coo) and Deacon Neal Hook to the Sacred Heart Community.  Father Konaku is from Ghana, Africa and was ordained in 1995.  In 1998, he earned his Masters degree from Fordham and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Psychoanalysis in a combined program with Boston College and the University of Massachusetts.  Father Konaku arrived at the rectory in August to become our priest-in-residence.  His days are spent as chaplain at St. Mary’s and Samaritan Hospitals but he also will assist with liturgies at Sacred Heart.

Deacon Hook serves as homiletics instructor for those studying to be deacons. He also serves as chairperson of the liturgical subcommittee of the Diocesan Liturgical Commission.  For twenty years, from 1966-86, Deacon Hook served as organist and music director at Sacred Heart.

What’s a Missal?

This Missal that is changing is the one that the priest uses   on the altar.  This contains the prayers for both Sunday and weekday liturgies.  Some may remember the days of our having missals that we brought to church with us.  We now use missalettes and hymnals in church.  These books will contain the new prayers for those in the congregation, so you won’t need your own book for church.  So we can get used to the changes, there will be pew cards available to help us  all follow the new prayers used during mass beginning the first Sunday of Advent, 2011.

Next week: more questions and answers on the Missal.

Stars For Our Troops

The Stars For Our Troops Program takes worn, used American Flags and turns them into a prized possession for an American Soldier at home, on base or overseas.  Volunteers lovingly cut each embroidered star from the flag, dispose of the stripes properly, and place each star into a tiny plastic bag with a card.

The card reads: “I am part of our America Flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly.  The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn.  Please carry me as a reminder that you are not forgotten.”

You may drop your old American Flags at the rectory or send to:

Gettysburg Flag Works,  715 Columbia Turnpike East Greenbush, New York 12061 Attn: Stars for Our Troops
