Now Is The Time!

SCPS-150402-018Human nature has an uncanny ability to consistently function with the biased and unfounded conviction that we have more time to live than we actually have. We live from day to day at ease with the comfort of this self-delusion, and its consequent procrastination, whatever reality might in fact present to us. In today’s Gospel, Jesus addresses traditional Jewish answers to a perennial Old Testament mystery: Does God punish those who do evil in this life? And is a disaster which afflicts us in this life a sign of God’s punishment for sin?

Jesus’ answer is that judgment comes after death, not during life. But the hook is that we do not know when death will catch us. He gives two examples, one of death from an accident, and the other, death inflicted by another. In both cases death came sooner than expected, leaving no time to amend one’s ways before judgment.

Since we never know what might happen to us tomorrow, He emphasizes that it is critical to repent NOW! This is the message of Lent. Now reread and reflect upon the first two sentences above!
