Not My Will…

In a sense, our faith asks a great deal of us. As St. Paul reminds us in today’s second reading, since our calling is union with Christ, then we must die with him in order to rise with him. What might that mean? Suffering? You betcha! The very real suffering of giving up the ingrained habits of self will and egotism, that stand in the way of union with the divine.

Jesus passed the test: “Not my will by thine be done.” In his case, it involved both physical suffering, rejection by those whom he tried to help, and abandonment by his friends. We may not be called to endure all of that, but the goal remains: “Not my will…” Why do you suppose he taught us to pray: “Thy will be done on earth…”

Is such a struggle worthwhile? That is why the Scriptures keep telling us of rewards which God promises. So, in today’s first reading, a reward for a good deed. And in today’s Gospel, Jesus’ promise that “…he surely will not lose his reward.”
