Let Our Faith Shine As A Beacon

All three of today’s readings, if we meditate deeply on them, teach that faith is a gift which inevitably will be tested.

In the prophet Habakkuk, it is important to be aware that what we hear is not a continuous reading. Rather it reflects two differing parts. In the first, the prophet sees the terror about to be unleashed on them by the Babylonian juggernaut. In the second part is the vision that while terror is the immediate prospect, God will eventually save those who keep the faith.

In today’s second reading, we find St. Paul counselling Timothy that while faith will inevitably be challenged: “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice….do not be ashamed of your testimony to the Lord.”

Finally, in today’s Gospel we see that Jesus sets the bar high for those who believe. “When you have done all you have been commanded, say: we are unprofitable servants, we have done what we were obliged to do.”

And what are we obliged to do? To let our faith shine like a beacon for all to see! It is not a gift to be covered by a bushel basket, but rather expected to bear fruit for the kingdom, no matter what that may cost us.
