Ignorance Is No Excuse

In today’s Gospel two things strike me which could easily slip past us, since they are only mentioned incidentally.

First, today’s passage follows immediately the story of the Risen Jesus walking with two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and the fact that they did not recognize Him until “the breaking of the bread”. Notice this is repeated in the opening sentence of today’s reading. The challenge to us of course is: do we recognize Christ (i.e. His mystical body) in the breaking of the bread/Eucharist?

The second point is the seemingly offhanded statement that reads: “He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.” Do we sufficiently know the Scriptures, so that our minds might be opened? Or do we rest our case with those whom St. Peter was addressing in the first reading when he said: “You acted out of ignorance.”

Is our plea the same as those who called for Jesus’ execution? I hope not. There is an old adage: “Ignorance is no excuse.”
