“I Am The True Vine…”

DSC_5898Let’s face it, our challenge as Baptized Christians can not be more clearly defined than that found in St. John’s words in today’s second reading: “…let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth.” Perhaps the traditional axiom “Actions speak louder than words” bears more truth than we realize!

In today’s Gospel we read one of the classic passages teaching God’s truth: “…I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” The mystical body of Christ, under the image of the vine and the branches, clearly shows us that if we would only let go of our selfish inclinations and distractions and let Christ’s presence within us operate freely and transform us we will “bear much fruit” and would truly be loving persons in both word and deed!

This is what the Eucharist is meant to accomplish in us, and why we return to it again and again… to surrender our hearts to His transforming power, and become true disciples of Jesus Christ!
