Give Thanks To The Lord

The first Scripture reading for the fourth Sunday of Advent contains a very important lesson for us in relating to God. In King David’s day, in general, the times were very good for God’s chosen people. There were minimal external threats, and David’s people had never been so materially prosperous (and in a short time would never again be so).

In thanksgiving to God for his good fortune, David decided to glorify God by building Him a temple. Note well what sort of God we are dealing with and what is His response. God tells David, you will not build me a temple, but I will build you an unbelievable family! (i.e. God’s graciousness and generosity always far exceeds whatever we think we can give to Him.)

This requires a lot of meditation. All the good things God has provided for us, be it talents, or intelligence, or education, or health, or material security, or the gift of loved ones, family and friends, etc. always, when we think about it, far exceed anything we could give to Him.

In response, we can only thank God. The word Eucharist means thanksgiving. Especially at this time of the year when we celebrate God’s great gift of the Incarnation, let us give a whole-hearted thanks, especially in the Eucharist.
