Food for Eternal Life

5 Aug 2018 by SHRCChurch, Comments Off on Food for Eternal Life

In the second Mass canon, which we hear so often, early on are the words: “Make holy, therefore, these gifts we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dew-fall.” In Old Testament imagery, dew-fall was seen to be a sign of God’s action on His creation. The canon statement is meant to be a direct reference to that verse in today’s first reading describing the gift of manna in the desert.

This “manna”, has always been understood as foreshadowing the bread of the Eucharist, which, by the way we pray for each time we recite the Our Father just before Communion time… “give us this day our daily bread…”.

The Eucharist is truly food that doesn’t perish, but rather “endures for eternal life.”

How often, because we hear these words so regularly, do we fail to let their tremendous depth of meaning really sink in, and affect our consciousness.

Perhaps today is the time to begin to give it more thoughtful reflection.
