Focus on Him!

scps-150403-021-cropLife inevitably imposes upon us multiple allegiances. Whether we like it or not to give but a partial list, we owe allegiance to our parents, to our immediate family, to our extended family, to our friends, to our benefactors, to our nation, to the Church, and ultimately personally to God Himself. Today we celebrate and focus on that which takes precedence above all others, and from which all the others fall into place. Note that God does not ask us to pledge allegiance to a vague idea of whom He might be, but rather to a person, human like us in everything but sin: Jesus Christ, now gloriously risen, now seated at the right hand of the Father, and destined to draw all creation to Himself (2nd reading: “…to reconcile all things…”) to mystical union!

This is the vision our faith bestows upon us. But, and this but is a big one, He has created us with free will and continues to honor that freedom to choose or ignore… and Salvation History teaches us that our will has been weakened by Original sin and the habits of personal sin.

Perhaps in an examination of conscience we can no longer recognize where we have turned from Christ our king, but I’ll bet there are many times when we have simply ignored Him. Today is a reminder where to focus our attention!
