First Week Of Advent

advent-2010-001Notice the opening prayer of today’s liturgy: “Grant your faithful…the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds…”

So starts the theme for the opening of Advent, i.e. not the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem but the final coming of the Lord, which can also be found in all three of today’s Scripture readings, perhaps most explicitly in Isaiah, who in turn is quoting from the 4th chapter of the prophet Micah and which can also be found in a number of the Psalms.

Note the poetic allusions: all nations will come to Sion to worship the true God, seeking instruction in His ways and walking in the light of the Lord. But at the same time while we may speak of all nations, there is no avoiding the fact that judgment will come as well. Isaiah says it and Jesus makes it emphatically clear that not everyone is going to enjoy it.

Advent therefore is a reminder of what is in store for us and the world. There is no room for apathy or smug confidence. It is time to recognize and pay attention to God’s plan for His creation. The birth of Jesus was but the historical beginning. It is part of the already; we are called to face with righteous deeds the not yet, but the inexorably will be.
