Feed the Hungry!

29 Jul 2018 by SHRCChurch, Comments Off on Feed the Hungry!

The church has always understood the episodes of the miraculous feedings of the crowds, by the prophet Elisha in the Old Testament, and Jesus in the New as a foreshadowing of the gift of the Eucharist.

It is doubtful that many of us have ever experienced what it is like to starve. For the most part, whenever we are hungry, we simply eat. It has seldom to never been the case that we had nothing at all available to eat.

In the readings today we hear of God providing necessary nourishment, and are asked to consider that in the Eucharist He provides us with spiritual nourishment for our new life (through Baptism) in the new creation in Christ.

Have you ever thought about how many of those around us may very well be spiritually starving for lack of spiritual nourishment? Perhaps they are our relatives and friends or our neighbors. Do we recognize our Baptismal responsibility to be missionaries, and pray for the guidance how, and courage to save those spiritually starving from spiritual death? Or do we habitually ignore their plight, as in the story of Dives and Lazarus?
