Do Not Despair

In today’s second reading, St. Paul cautions us: “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit…” Perhaps you can recall from your old catechism lessons that the great sin against the Holy Spirit, and the one sin which God cannot forgive is despair. Don’t be too sure that can never be a problem for us.

So, in today’s first reading we find the great prophet Elijah, who had just performed a great miracle against the prophets of the false god Baal, now fleeing for his life from the wrath of the wicked king Ahab. He is weary from his lack of success in converting people. “He prayed for death, saying: ‘This is enough O Lord’”.

Through Baptism Jesus has commissioned us to bring about the reign of God on earth. It should be obvious that even after nearly 2000 years we have not been terribly successful. Have we not been tempted like Elijah to grow tired and become frustrated, and want to give up, shouting: enough? If we read on in the Elijah story, we immediately find God directing the prophet – not by hitting him on the head with a two by four to get his attention, but by whispering in the breeze – to carry on the mission. So must we!
