Children of Light

DSC_5978Today’s long Gospel reading reminds us of the all too human ability to refuse to accept facts when they don’t agree with what we are used to and comfortable with. Jesus met with, and the formerly blind man in today’s story was made the victim of, prejudice (literally: judging beforehand) by the Pharisees who were unable to accept Jesus for who he was.

Make no mistake about how difficult it is to avoid prejudices. And recognize that we all have them, even the author of today’s first reading seems to indicate as much (e.g. God said to Samuel: “Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature.” Yet when David arrives on the scene, he cannot help but describe him as “…he was handsome to behold and making a splendid appearance.”)

How do we overcome this human foible which interferes with pursuing truth? By taking the words of St. Paul to the Ephesians seriously! “… Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness; rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention the things done by them in secret; but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, for everything that becomes visible is light.”

Pray always that Christ will be our light, and that therefore He gives us the light to judge aright!
