Called to Discipleship!

DSC_6769The theme for this Sunday’s liturgy of the Word is the call to discipleship, which follows naturally from last week’s look at the implications of our Baptism.

Our first response ought to be that of the prophet Samuel found in today’s first reading: “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.” In today’s second reading St. Paul reminds us that being responsive to God’s call requires us to discipline our weaknesses, lest we be seriously distracted, if not downright impeded, from the call. (St. Paul even specifies some obstacles which we have come to call the seven deadly sins: pride, covertness, lust, anger, gluttony, etc.)

If we are disciplined and responsive, we can expect to share the same experience which the very first disciples recounted in today’s Gospel: “…and they went and saw where Jesus was staying, and they stayed with him.”
