By Their Deeds…

In Old Covenant times, both prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah used the imagery of the vine or vineyard as an example for God’s people, with the implied, and somewhat uncomfortable conclusion that we had not born good “fruit”.

In today’s Gospel we find Jesus identifying Himself as the true vine (as opposed to the vine spoken of by the prophets). In the new, post resurrection creation, we thus find ourselves mysteriously joined to Christ as the new people of God. Moreover, a key word in today’s readings is “remain”. On God’s part He remains (Emanuel – God remaining with us!) and asks only that we in turn remain with Him.

As long as we continue to fall short of (His) perfect charity, there will always be a certain anxiety as to whether or not we are indeed remaining with Emanuel. Thus for the want of a better criterion, we look for good deeds (ie: bearing good fruit) as a basis for “some consolation in the Holy Spirit”.

“By their deeds you will know them!”
