But By the Grace of God!

20130627_194012One cannot help but notice that all three readings for the 30th Sunday make mention of trials/tests in store for us in this life.

In the first reading, in urging us to pray, is the conviction that the Lord hears the cries of the oppressed. In the second reading, St. Paul speaks of his own trials and abandonment by those from whom he expected some support. And finally in the Gospel, Jesus once again reminds us that if we think we are in control of life’s circumstances, we are seriously out of touch with reality. Rather we are to pray to God for mercy, since we are all sinners, and but for the grace of God, who knows what sort of person we might be.

God asks us to be responsible, which by the very word itself means that we respond to the graces He offers us, so that finally we may say with St. Paul: “I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith.”
