Are You a “Believer”

Altar Setting - 01Today’s Scripture readings, each in its own way, asks us to reflect upon the mystery of faith and the quality of our own personal faith. Despite the extraordinary displays of His power in liberating them from slavery in Egypt, during the forty years in the desert, how many times do we find God’s chosen people complaining, testing and arguing rather than trusting the One who saved them?

Their response to God’s gift was to repeatedly complain. When the Assyrians conquered Samaria in 722B.C. they removed most of the local population and replaced them with foreigners to ensure that there would be no subsequent uprisings from the local population. These foreigners eventually adopted the religion of the Hebrews, but were never accepted, especially by those who suffered and returned from the exile in Babylon. Yet it was a Samaritan woman, and eventually other Samaritans who readily believed Jesus was the Messiah, and accepted the gift of faith while His own people resisted.

When it comes to faith, man proposes, but God disposes. It’s a gift. Are we duly grateful.
