Actions Speak Louder than Words

20130302DSC_2802-030Today, the last Sunday of the church year, we are reminded once again in the first reading from the prophet Ezekiel that while God has promised to look after us as a good shepherd tends his flock, nevertheless there will be a judgment and not everyone will pass muster.

In the Gospel reading Jesus continues the theme of a shepherd tending his flock, and that of judgment via the symbolism of separating the sheep from the goats. Jesus however, goes one step further and spells out some details to help us identify the criteria by which we will be judged:

“For I was hungry and you gave me food…thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.”

Clearly, these are not deeds of the self-centered, arrogant, wealth seeking, pleasure bent and power hungry of this world, but those of one who is “…meek and humble of heart.”

Reflecting for a moment on our own day to day activities, the values we live and the choices we make… on which side will our deeds place us when judgement comes?
